Unauthorized Autobiography

A young aspiring David Diego Rodríguez

Hi! This is the page where I tell you my life story. However, I’m not sure if I am well-qualified to do so since I still don’t know myself well after all these years. But here goes anyway. First of all, I would like to say that false modesty prevents me from bragging about all of my accomplishments. Sometimes I rub people the wrong way, but if I didn’t occasionally annoy someone, I wouldn’t feel as if I were living up to my full potential. One of these days, I’ll figure out how to write this autobiography. In the meantime, here is a brief sketch of what I plan to cover.

Background

I am, or have been, at some point in my life, a son, grandson, brother, father, uncle, great uncle, brother-in-law, son-in-law, cousin, godfather, student, boyfriend, fiancé, husband, ex-husband, teacher, paperboy, manual laborer, telephone switchboard technician, writer, police officer, tenant, homeowner, landlord, retiree, among other things. My favorite color is red. My favorite number is 23, and not because of Michael Jordan, but rather because of my favorite paper route number 23. I’m 5’8″. I weigh 180 pounds. I used to have blond hair, then it turned reddish, then brown, but now it’s mostly gray. I started running in high school and continued after high school, in the Marines, after the Marines, and I run to this day. Running keeps me healthy and sane.

Education

Holy Cross Grade School, Divine Heart Seminary, Tilden Technical High School, Gage Park High School, Fallbrook Community College, Richard J. Daley College, University of Illinois at Chicago. School of Hard Knocks. The World Wide Web. My personal library that covered by a protective layer of dust. I learned the most useful and practical things outside of the classroom.

Favorite Books (in no particular order)

Moby Dick, War and Peace, Potatoes Are Cheaper, Catch-22, Huckleberry Finn, The Marx Family Saga, Don Quixote, The Many Loves of Doby Gillis, Crime and Punishment, Jude the Obscure, Heart of Darkness, Things Fall Apart, Flowers of Evil, On Walden Pond, Song of Myself, Tom Sawyer, The Scarlet Letter, Portrait of a Lady, The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Divine Comedy, Benito Cereno, The Idiot, The Catcher in the Rye, Waterland, Ragtime, One Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich, The Death Ivan Ilyich

Pet Peeves

Dietary candy, junk mail, decaffeinated coffee, spam (not the kind in a can, which I love!), non-alcoholic beer, unwanted nicknames, overweight people who tell me I have to exercise.

To Do List

Watch the top one hundred movies. Read all the Nobel Prize winners for literature. Write a novel. Write a play. Finish this website. Post a video on YouTube.com. Start a PodCast. Figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Stop writing To Do Lists. Live happily ever after. I think that’s enough to keep me busy for the rest of my life.
